The Business Owner’s Guide to Thermal Paper

The Business Owner’s Guide to Thermal Paper

Stop Getting Cheated on Your Receipt Rolls

If you run a busy cafe, restaurant or retail store in Malaysia, you know the drill. You find a "cheaper" supplier for thermal rolls, hit buy, and feel like a procurement genius.

Then the rolls arrive.

Suddenly, your staff is changing rolls every two hours instead of every four. Or worse, the roll is so "fat" it won't even fit into your printer.

You aren't saving money. You're paying for air.

If you’re tired of the "Calculation Headache," here is exactly what you need to look for to ensure you’re getting what you actually paid for.

1. The 80mm x 60mm vs. 80mm x 80mm Confusion

Most standard receipt printers (the big ones on your counter) take 80mm wide paper. but the second numberβ€”the diameterβ€”is where the trickery happens.

  • 80mm x 80mm (as known as "Jumbo" roll): The industry standard for high-volume counters. It’s a thick roll that lasts.

  • 80mm x 60mm: Often sold as a "bargain," but it contains significantly less paper. You’ll be swapping these out during your lunch rush, guaranteed.

The Deals Club Rule: If you have the space in your printer, always go for the 80mm diameter. Most StoreHub printers (like the 'XPrinter' or 'Star' models) use '80mm x 80mm' thermal paper rolls. Fewer changeovers = less downtime during peak hours.

2. GSM: Why "Thick" Isn't Always Better

GSM (Grams per Square Meter) measures the density of the paper.

  • 58gsm (Thin): This is the "sweet spot" for most F&B businesses. It’s thin enough to fit more length onto a single roll but high-quality enough that it won't tear or jam.

  • 70gsm (Thick): This feels like a "luxury" receipt. It’s thicker, whiter, and the image stays clear for years. Use this if you’re a high-end boutique or if your customers need to keep receipts for long-term warranties.

3. The "Core" Trap

Look at the plastic or cardboard tube in the middle of your roll. Dishonest suppliers use a large core to make a short roll look like a full 80mm diameter roll. You think you're getting a "fat" roll, but you're actually getting a small amount of paper wrapped around a big piece of plastic.

At DealsClub, we use Coreless or Small Core technology. We pack as much actual paper as possible into that diameter so you get the maximum "meters per ringgit."

Which one do you actually need?

Choose Thin (58gsm) if: You’re a high-volume cafe, food truck, or hawker. You go through 10+ rolls a day and need the lowest cost-per-transaction without the paper jamming your machine.

Choose Thick (70gsm) if: You’re a fine-dining restaurant, a spa, or a retail store. You want the receipt to feel substantial in the customer's hand, and you want the print to stay "dark" for a long time.
